Prescription for Action: Equitable Building Decarbonization

Prescription for Action: Equitable Building Decarbonization

Over the past several years, California has positioned itself as a leader in the fight against climate change. Our state legislature and leaders have set ambitious goals, including achieving net-zero carbon emissions, producing zero waste, and reducing the influence of the fossil fuel industry. However, not all proposed solutions are as transformative as they might seem or as holistic as they need to be.

At PSR-LA, we approach climate policies through the lens of health equity and environmental justice. We consistently evaluate proposed solutions, identifying ways to elevate them to better protect and improve the health and well-being of all Californians, particularly our most vulnerable communities. Among these efforts is our focus on equitable building decarbonization.

As we navigate the uncertainty and challenges posed by the 2024 presidential election, the need for healthy homes has never been more urgent. Despite potential federal setbacks, California’s cities, regions, and state government have an opportunity to enact meaningful policies that safeguard health, ensure resilience, and secure a sustainable future. By aligning environmental and social justice initiatives, we can achieve equitable building decarbonization statewide, advancing health equity, climate justice, and housing reform.

We must remain committed to creating an environment where every home is a healthy home—safe, sustainable, and resilient.

In this Prescription for Action: Equitable Building Decarbonization series, we will explore the critical role of equitable building decarbonization as a pathway to achieving healthy homes and advancing justice for all.
