Call to Action for STAND-LA! Judge rules against LA City's Oil Drilling Phaseout Ordinance

The LA County Superior Court made a devastating decision to overturn Los Angeles’s landmark ordinance banning new oil drilling and phasing out existing wells.

This reckless ruling undoes the progress we made in 2022 when STAND-LA and allies celebrated a historic victory— the LA City Council passing an ordinance to phase out oil drilling, require site cleanup, and commission an amortization report to determine a fair timeline for the phase-out.

We’re outraged by this decision, which caters to the oil industry’s profits at the expense of public health—especially for low-income Black and Brown communities. LA must be a place where everyone can thrive, and we won’t back down in our fight to end neighborhood oil drilling and combat climate change.

We need your support now more than ever! The fight isn’t over, but we need you to amplify our message and push our elected officials to act immediately.

TAKE ACTION TODAY!

Now, more than ever, we need to get AB 3233 over the finish line and signed into law. This bill reaffirms the ability of local governments to regulate oil and gas drilling, protecting our communities. Here’s how you can show your support for AB 3233:

COMMENT TEMPLATE

Dear Governor Newsom,

I am writing to urge you to sign AB 3233, the Local Environmental Choice and Safety Act. The California legislature passed this bill to reaffirm local government authority to protect their residents from the deadly impacts of oil and gas drilling. It enables cities and counties to respond to local needs and help California achieve its climate, health, and environmental justice goals.

This is a critical bill to pass to uplift environmental justice and protect the health and safety of frontline communities, especially because a district court recently ruled against the City of Los Angeles to enact their oil drilling phaseout ordinance. Please sign AB 3233 as soon as possible.

Thank you.

About AB 3233

AB 3233 is a critical bill aimed at protecting local democratic decision-making, public health, and the climate. It affirms the rights of cities and counties to pass laws regulating or phasing out oil and gas pollution in their communities. In response to a narrow 2023 court ruling that threatens these rights, AB 3233 seeks to counter Big Oil’s efforts to undermine local authority, ensuring communities can continue to safeguard their residents and ecosystems from fossil fuel pollution.
