Back from the Brink: Recommitting to the Fight for Nuclear and Racial Justice
PSR-LA played a leading role in the Back from the Brink campaign’s “Organizing to Prevent Nuclear War in the Present Moment,” webcast and conversation on Sept. 10. Over 250 people throughout the country joined us for a spirited event featuring Dr. Vincent Intondi, author of African Americans Against the Bomb: Nuclear Weapons, Colonialism, and the Black Freedom Movement. PSR-LA managed technical aspects of the webinar and Associate Director Denise Duffield presented on the intersection of nuclear weapons and health, environment and racial justice, and climate change. Sean Meyer of the Union of Concerned Scientists and Oliver Brown with the Syracuse Peace Council also presented. A video recording can be found here.
Dr. Intondi said that despite many crises facing the country, he is hopeful because the nuclear disarmament community is reckoning with racial injustice and beginning to combine the fight for racial equality with the fight for nuclear abolition. He noted that the current moment gives us a chance to “finally right the two biggest evils, the two biggest wrongs that this country has ever done–slavery and dropping the bomb.” Dr. Intondi closed with an inspiring call to action, “Let us think back years from now that September 10th, 2020 was the night, the night that we got together and recommitted ourselves to fight against racism and fight for nuclear disarmament in a way we’ve never done before.”
PSR-LA is committed to restructuring our local and national policies to better reflect the needs of communities by resisting wasteful military and police spending and prioritizing the health and well-being of our communities.
